Lucy Beal from the Slough Jets U15s has had the honour of being selected to be part of the England U16 Girls team that took part in a five team tournament in Piispala in Finland over the weekend of 12/13 December. The team had a tough couple of days, playing four full-length games against teams containing some of the top female players in the country, many of who are expected to go on to represent Finland at World Championships and the Olympics.
Saturday started with a match against S-Kiekko/Kronan Hermes which England took time to adjust to and ended up losing 6-1. The evening match was against a strong KJT team, and despite working better as a team the girls were unlucky to be on the wrong end of a 6-0 score-line which didn’t really reflect the game. The game of the weekend was on Sunday morning against TPS when every player performed to her best and the team drew 0-0. By Sunday evening there were some tired legs, and the team slipped to a 7-2 defeat.
Despite only recording a draw and three losses the girls all enjoyed their experience of playing hockey at the highest levels in a real “hockey nation”.
In addition to the games there was a fully packed programme which included time on a skating “treadmill” and shooting practice, as well as a BBQ, ten-pin bowling and, for a few of the braver girls, swimming in an ice covered lake.
Lucy is currently trialling for the England Girls U14s team for next season and hopes to make the team so that she can return to Finland in 2016.
